Church Membership

![]() The difference between "attendees" and "members" can be summed up in one word: COMMITMENT. A. REASONS FOR MEMBERSHIP 1. A Biblical Reason Christ committed to the church. Any individual outside of the body cannot fulfill the "One Another" commands in the Bible, which is the church. "...Christ love the church, and gave His life for it." (Ephesians 5:25) 2. A Cultural Reason It is an antidote to our society. We live in an age where very few want to be committed to anything- a job, a marriage and our country. This attitude has even produced a generation of "church shoppers and hoppers." Membership swims against the current of world's "consumer religion." It is an unselfish decision. Commitment always builds character. 3. A Practical Reason It defines who can be counted on. Every team has a roster. Every school has an enrollment. Every business has a payroll. Every army has an enlistment. Even our country takes a census and requires a voter registration. Membership identifies family. 4. A Personal Reason It produces spiritual growth. The New Testament places a major emphasis on the need for Christians to be accountable to each other for spiritual growth. You cannot be accountable when you're not committed to any specific church. B. STEPS TO FREE METHODIST CHURCH      MEMBERSHIP 1. Faith in Christ Jesus and Baptism If you have already been baptized in another Evangelical church no need for you to be baptized. If not, you need to talk with the pastor to make arrangements for this. 2. Finish S.M.A.R.T CLASS This is a class that will give you an overview of this church. 3. Interview with the Pastor You need to meet one-to-one with the pastor to talk about membership. You may have additionaL questions that can be answered during that time. The pastor also needs to be acquainted with you to be able to recommend you for membership. 4. Approval of the Official Board The Pastor recommends to the Official Board new members at FMC. If you are transferring your membership from another Evangelical church, the Pastor will also inform The Official Board. 5. Covenant Day When your membership at the FMC has been approved by the Official Board, arrangements will be made for you to take the Membership Covenant in front of the congregation. The Pastor will prepare you for this. |
